- Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT
Steel case and Calibre P.2002 for the Manufacture collection
After the Radiomir 8 Days GMT of 2005, a limited edition of which marked the premiere of the Calibre P.2002, created in the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, the Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT with the same movement is inaugurating the Manufacture collection, a family of watches which uses movements 100% made in Panerai.
The aesthetic of the Luminor 1950 case is celebrated once again in a range inspired by Panerai’s military past, but with an updated, sharper design with precise detailing. With a diameter of 44 millimetres, the steel case has the device which identifies Panerai in the watchmaking field, that is, the patented bridge protecting the winding crown (the inscription RE. T.M. on the bridge confirms its exclusiveness) which ensures the perfect water-resistance of the watch.
The Calibre P.2002 interprets the complications traditionally expressed by Panerai through the application of its resources of craftsmanship and complete technical understanding. The power reserve of 8 days, tested by Panerai at the end of the 1940s, has been repeated in the Panerai movement by using an assembly consisting of three spring barrels. To achieve accurate setting of the hands and synchronisation with the reference time signal, the seconds hand jumps to zero as a result of the zero reset device, a sophisticated zeroing system which at the same time instantly stops the balance wheel. Avant-garde techniques are employed in the construction of the movement. This is hand-wound and consists of 245 components, with a free-spring balance and no conventional regulator. This means that very precise regulation can be carried out by adjusting the screws directly on the balance wheel itself.
The Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT’s black cushion dial (formed of two superimposed plates, the upper one being perforated and the lower one covered with luminous material) has a little calendar window at 3 o’clock, symmetrically complemented by the traditional continuous seconds dial. The power reserve indication, employing a triangular index which moves across a graduated linear scale, is at 6 o’clock, while the arrow-pointed centre hand of the second time zone is partnered by the day/night subdivision, visible through the circular aperture at 9 o’clock, which through its different colours enables the hours before and after midday to be distinguished.
